Subaru Impreza WRX

I use to own a WRX back in the uni days but have never had the chance to detail one with a machine buffer, it was all done by hand. Coincidently, my friend owns one and he needed some work done to his as he was telling me the paint is starting to oxidise, scratches over the body and lots of swirl marks. The colour of the car also had deteriorate through weather and its lost the shine that it once had. So I was more than happy to have that sorted out.

Here is how it looks before I started:

After half a days work:

It turned out great, all in all a good days of work and was able to fulfill one of my wants to be able to detail a car that I never could have when I owned one.

Mercedes Benz S63 AMG

This time round I had the chance to work on a Mercedes S63 AMG whom is a friend of mine and had never had his car properly detailed. One would think that with such a car, it would be well looked after and maintained due to the value of it but it never did. Being black as the colour, any signs of dirt, swirl marks or scratches would be obvious due to the nature of its colour. So he had agreed to have his car detailed by me.

Before view:

Quite a fair bit of stubborn water spot stains and swirl marks that requires some immediate attention

After some intensive work, I was happy with the finished product and so was my friend. He could not believe that it could be done or more accurately he had never seen such a big change other than repainting the car.

After view:

How thick is your car's CLEAR COAT???

A lot of people have asked me how thick are clear coats their cars??? Won't cutting the clear coat back make it thinner and soon make the paint fade?

The answer to that is no it won't, most factory cars have between 1.5-2.0mm thickness of clear coat and by this thickness I would mean for Nissan, Toyota, Honda, VW, BMW etc. There are thicker factory clear coats between 2.0 - 4.0mm and are usually found in Ferrari, Lamborghini, or in short exotics.

Many of my photos posted up have gone through paint correction, whereby the clear coats have been cut back to make way for a new surface. It may seem to have taken a lot out of the clear coat but actual fact is, its only a fraction of it. In order to cut it down to the primer it requires much more effort from a Dual Action buffer as compared to a Rotary buffer. You could literally buff the clear coat 10-15 times before you would see the primer using a Dual Action buffer.

A cars surface can be broken down into 25% - 25% - 50% meaning, 25% primer, 25% paint and 50% clear coat. So it really is not as bad as many people think, but it is always good to have a Depth Gauge tool or a Thickness Gauge to measure how much clear coat you have to play with before you start.

Audi A4

This time round is an Audi A4, condition of it is not really that bad, it has the usual light swirl marks like most other cars do, lights scratches and minimal wax protection on the paint. Just needs a good clean and a nice coat of wax.

Some hours of paint correction later, with a nice coat of carnauba wax, the car looks like this:
